AFP photographer Georges Gobet has been awarded the 2003 Visa d'Or for spot news for his work during the unrest in Ivory Coast. Gobet, 50, who has been posted in Ivory Coast since 2001, was awarded the top prize at the 15th International Photojournalism Festival in Perpignan, southern France, on Saturday, beating five other nominees.

He has worked for Agence France-Presse since 1979, and has covered several world stories including events in Northern Ireland, Afghanistan, Bosnia and Israel, as well as several major sporting events.

Two other Visa d'Or (Golden Visa) awards for the best photojournalism between September 2002 and August 2003 were announced during the festival, organised by Visa pour l'Image. Cheryl Diaz Meyer took the prize in the daily press category with her pictures of the Iraq war for The Dallas Morning News, and the magazine category was won by Philip Blenkinsop, from VU agency, for his pictures from Laos.
